COURSES
2+ Mile Course:
- Starts and ends at Group Site A and follows the dirt road to the trailhead. The trail forks to the right and follows a gentle uphill and slightly rolling terrain on the G-Loop Trail. After about a mile, the course takes a sharp left onto the H-Loop and it is predominately downhill. The course make a left towards the campgrounds. Elevation gain is about 270 feet.
5+ Mile Course
- Starts and ends at Group Site A and follows the dirt road to the trailhead. This course follows the popular G-Loop trail. The trail forks to the right and follows a gentle uphill and slightly rolling terrain. This is also the first half of the 2-mile course. After about a mile the trail bends left near the warming hut and climbs up four switchbacks gaining some elevation. You will reach the crest of the uphill at about 2 miles. At about 2.3 miles the trail splits and the 5.5 mile course takes the left fork (straight). The trail dumps out into an open meadow and takes a sharp left turn to connect to the lower half of the trail. This section has rolling ups and downs. At about 5.3 miles the course takes a tight right to take you back towards the trailhead and to the dirt road that leads back to group site A. Elevation gain is about 727 feet.
8+ Mile Course
- Attention: This course is slightly different than the previous two years! The blue text indicates the changes in the new course.
- This course follows the first 2.5 miles of the 5+ mile course. It starts and ends at Group Site A and follows the dirt road to the trailhead. The trail forks to the right and follows a gentle uphill and slightly rolling terrain on the G-loop Trail. After about a mile the trail bends left near the warming hut and climbs up four switchbacks gaining some elevation. You will reach the crest of the uphill at about 2 miles. At about 2.3 miles the trail forks and the course follows the right fork onto the Ropetow Trail. At about 3.3 miles runners will encounter the Skihill dirt road. You will cross this road and enter onto the Making Pancakes Trail. This is the location of an Aid Station. Follow this trail until you encounter a multi-way intersection at about 3.8 miles. You will take a sharp right U-turn onto the Powderberry Connector trail that leads to the ATV trail. When you hit the ATV trail take another right. At about 4.6 miles you will encounter the Skihill Road again. Take another sharp right U-turn onto the road. Follow this road, passing where you crossed it earlier, and follow for about 3/4 miles until you reconnect with G-loop. There is an Aid Station at this location. This section has rolling ups and downs. At about 8.3 miles the course takes a tight right towards the campgrounds. Follow the dirt road back to group site B/C. Elevation gain is about 1,250 feet.
13.3 Mile Course (new distance for 2023!)
- This course follows the first 2.5 miles of the 5.5 mile course. It starts and ends at Group Site A and follows the dirt road to the trailhead. The trail forks to the right and follows a gentle uphill and slightly rolling terrain on the G-loop Trail. After about a mile the trail bends left near the warming hut and climbs up four switchbacks gaining some elevation. You will reach the crest of the uphill at about 2 miles. At about 2.3 miles the trail forks and the course follows the right fork onto the Rope Tow Trail. At about 3.3 miles runners will encounter the Skihill dirt road. You will cross this road and enter onto the Making Pancakes Trail. This is the location of an Aid Station. Follow this trail until you encounter a multi-way intersection at about 3.8 miles. At this intersection you will take the second sharp right onto the Pancake Connector trail and you will start to descend and connect to the Ice Plant trail at about 4.3 miles. At about 6 miles you will take a sharp right onto mid-mountain trail. Please pay attention because the main trail continues downhill and can miss this turn! Where Mid mountain trail connects with Total BS there will be a self-serve aid station with either water bottles or a jug to refill bottles. This is where it starts the climb back to the top of the mountain. There are numerous switchbacks! At 8.4 miles the trail T's at the ATV trail. Take a right and follow the ATV trail until you encounter Skihill Road again at about 9.4 miles. Here you take a sharp right turn and follow the dirt road for 3/4 miles. You will reconnect to the G-loop trail at the aid station. This section has rolling ups and downs. At about 12.9 miles the course takes a tight right to take you back towards the trailhead. Follow the dirt road back to Group Site A for the finish line! Total elevation gain is about 1,850 feet.
FULL MARATHON DISTANCE!
- This course is the same as the half marathon however times 2. Everyone will run it counter-clockwise the first lap, and opposite direction the second lap.
EVENT DETAILS:
- The start and finish is located at the Ward Mountain Forest Service Campgrounds at the shared parking for Group Sites A.
- There is a large parking area directly across from Group Site A for participants. It is a short walk to the start line.
- The trail will be marked with flagging, and turns and forks will have arrow signs and flagging. Where there might be confusion, the course will have 'wrong way' signs.
- IMPORTANT: Most of the trails are not marked with trail names. However, flagging and signs will keep you on course.
- There will be no aid stations on the 2+ mile course, one aid station on the 5+ mile course, two aid station on the 8+ mile course, and three aid stations on the 13+ and 26+ mile courses. The third aid station is an un-manned station and self-serve.
- There is one porta potty at the aid station on ski hill. And there are pit toilets at the start/finish line and at the trail head.
- Please be courteous if needing to pass another participant. Announce you are passing and indicate which side.
- This event will be timed with disposable chips.
- Awards will be presented to top three male and female of each course and first dog of each course, and top three youth for the 2 mile run. Everyone gets a finisher medal and an event shirt!
- If you do not follow the exact course, you will be disqualified and not eligible for awards.
- Please do not litter on the trail! Carry out your garbage of dispose of at an aid station.
- Anyone running with a dog, will start at the back of the pack. See dog rules below.
- Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
- Dogs must be under control at all times.
- Kids 13 and under with a dog must be accompanied by an adult.
- Extendable leads longer than two meters are not allowed on the course.
- Only one dog per person allowed.
- Owners must clean up dog’s feces at the start/finish area and on the trail. Take soiled bags with you and dispose of at the finish line.
- Use common sense when involving your dog in this race. Please do not bring your dog if:
- Your dog is not fit enough to run/walk the entire course.
- Is not leashed trained.
- Does not get along with other dogs, adults, or kids.
- Runners without dogs have the right-of-way. Please make sure there is ample room to pass if needed.
- Ely Outdoor Enthusiasts is not responsible for any injuries to your dog.
- Remember not everyone loves dogs as much as we do! Please remember to keep control of your dog at all times.
